3 Alternatives to Traditional Lending - Businesses on A Budget

At NDWBC, we understand how disheartening it can be to put your dreams on the line and experience rejection when seeking funding. We also know that many women are hesitant to take out loans due to current interest rates.  If you're seeking financial freedom without the hassle of a traditional loan, here are a few alternatives to consider:

Funding Friday Grants

NDWBC’s Funding Fridays can help you find funding sources and access capital without a traditional loan.

Many organizations, businesses, and government agencies offer grants to small businesses, particularly those owned by women and minorities. Each week, NDWBC shares vetted funding opportunities for women entrepreneurs through our Funding Fridays series. On the page, you can find grant amounts or search by funding categories. While grants can provide crucial financial support, it’s advisable for businesses to diversify their funding sources and reduce the risk associated with relying solely on one source of funding. Join our email list to be notified of new funding opportunities weekly.

PROS – Even though the economy is experiencing inflation, private sectors, and government programs are still offering free money to business owners and entrepreneurs. Grants do not have to be repaid.

WATCH FOR – Understand that free grants and programs have reporting goals. Ensure you stay true to your mission and that you can profit while reporting.

TIPS - Keep a record of your application data. Having records can help you:

  • Save time by giving you a starting point

  • Tailor your approach as you pitch yourself to different funding audiences.

Grant Reimbursements Like Innovate ND

Are you a woman in North Dakota with a great business idea?  NDWBC is excited to announce that Innovate ND offers reimbursement for a portion of start-up costs for women entrepreneurs with innovative ideas.

NDWBC is one of the four entrepreneurial centers in the state that help facilitate this program. Some grants offer reimbursements for portions of start-up costs. Right now, women in North Dakota can apply to Innovate ND to be eligible for up to $22,500 and work with NDWBC's team of certified business coaches.  Participants must be:

  • Headquartered in North Dakota

  • Registered and in good standing with the North Dakota Secretary of State

  • Have a scalable business

  • And have a new or innovative solution in the market

PROS – If you are developing a new innovative product or service, this program offers funding reimbursements. Each business is assigned a coach to guide them through the program. Plus, participants have access to a statewide network of subject matter experts to help with specific questions.

TIPS – Securing a grant is an excellent way to kickstart a project, but it's crucial to think beyond the grant period to ensure the sustainability of your idea. This grant requires participants to pay for expenses, submit receipts, and meet timelines and phases of development.
